How Helpline House Strengthens Our Community

Founded in 1968, Helpline House on Bainbridge Island provides social services to individuals and families in need. Helpline offers housing and utility assistance, social work and counseling services, a food bank, medical supplies, and senior services. Additionally Helpline has many great programs for children, including Project Backpack and Project Happy Birthday.

Here at Windermere Bainbridge Island, we are proud supporters of Helpline House. Their work is vital and strengthens are community in many ways. We recently spoke to Executive Director Maria Metzler to learn more.

Maria Metzler, Executive Director

Maria has been the Executive Director at Helpline House for the last seven years, she shared her story of getting involved.

“I was living on the Island, but commuting to Seattle for work every day. My whole career has been in social services and nonprofits, and as such, I was aware of the amazing work of Helpline House in my community. My kids were young at the time and I wanted them to grow up understanding what a healthy, connected, intentional community looks like, specifically, their own community. When the opportunity arose to become a part of Helpline House, I jumped.”

Helpline House’s Inspiring Mission

When we asked Maria about how Helpline inspires her, she said, “‘Becoming a part of the circle of giving and receiving.’ We are all in that circle, in various places, all the time. There are moments in our lives when we are the givers and equally as many moments in our lives when we are the receivers. We give and receive daily – love, affection, guidance, lessons. Helpline House exemplifies this in our community. It is one of the most generous, philanthropic, giving communities out there. Helpline House is lucky enough to be the face of that on Bainbridge Island. However, I would be remiss not to add that I’m inspired not just by the ‘givers,’ but by the receivers, too. It takes courage to ask for help. We are a better, stronger, healthier community because of their bravery and willingness to come to Helpline House. Ultimately, I truly believe we are all givers and receivers, and being at Helpline House is just one example of how we live that every day. We would not and could not exist without our community. In 2023, we distributed 68,000 pounds of food a month.”

Helpline is making an incredible impact, and we’re so grateful for Maria’s efforts and the rest of the Helpline House team. Additionally, they have a new mental health program for kids. Maria informed us that “Helpline House is the only provider of free mental health therapy for kids ages 5-12 in the area.”

How You Can Help

A great way to support Helpline House is through participating in a food drive. Also, you can donate food in the designated bins at Town & Country or Safeway. Financial support is wonderful, too. By making a monetary donation, Helpline has more purchasing power due to partnerships. Your dollars go further to purchase more food because staff can buy needed items through other, larger, food systems.

Giving events are also an easy, rewarding way to show your support. The Kitsap Great Give is a fantastic time to donate. April 16th is the big day this year, with early giving starting on April 1st. Also, you can round up or give directly at the registers at Town & Country any time you shop. In the fall, the annual Turkey Trot is a wonderful fundraiser.

If you’d like to help more regularly, there are weekly shifts available for volunteers. You can greet shoppers, stock and sort food, pick up food in the morning from local grocery stores, and more. Additionally, Helpline needs substitutes who can be available with a day or two’s notice when regular volunteers are unable to make it. Maria says, “Ultimately, one of the best ways of supporting our organization is to be an ambassador. Tell your family and friends about Helpline House and how you think Bainbridge Island is a better community because of it. Your support could inspire more giving, more volunteering, but also perhaps inspire a neighbor to seek help if previously they were unsure about it.”

Our Office’s Involvement

Windermere Bainbridge Island has long supported programs at Helpline House, namely Project Backpack. “We love Windermere,” Maria commented. “You make it possible for households who get brand new backpacks and school supplies for their children to also have a gift card to purchase the necessary items that are not included in the backpack pick up.”

Last year, our office also helped provide Thanksgiving meals by supporting Helpline’s Thanksgiving program with grocery store gift cards. This supplemented the Thanksgiving items Helpline offers in their food bank.

As Maria said, “It takes all of us” to improve our community. We’re so grateful for Helpline House!

Fun Volunteer Activities on Bainbridge Island

Looking for ways to easily volunteer on Bainbridge Island? Here are five fun opportunities. And who knows, you might make a new friend or learn something new. We enjoy giving back to our community and there are many local nonprofits that work so hard to make a difference. We hope this list serves as an inspiring starting point.

Assist and Enjoy Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA)

Bainbridge Island Museum of Art exhibits the art of both masters and emerging artists. If you love BIMA like we do, consider volunteering there. BIMA needs volunteers and will work with your schedule and interests to find a tailored role. In particular, volunteer opportunities can include docents, administrative volunteers, event support, and exhibition installation crew.

Serve as an Assistant Instructor with BI Parks and Recreation

While there are many ways to help out with Bainbridge Island Metro Park and Recreation District, one interesting way is to serve as an assistant instructor during an outdoor program or trip. You can see new sights, learn new skills, help with youth backpacking trips, adult kayaking classes, and more. To volunteer, simply fill out an application on their website.

Greet or Garden at Bloedel Reserve

Bloedel Reserve‘s gorgeous forests, gardens, and trails are enjoyed by people from all over the world, and the Reserve is often looking for different types of volunteers. From greeters to event volunteers, docents to gardeners, there are many volunteer options to choose from.

Support Furry Friends at PAWS of Bainbridge Island & North Kitsap

PAWS aims to reduce pet overpopulation and the unnecessary euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals. They do an incredible job and are looking for volunteers to fill a variety of roles. In particular, they’re seeking adoption counselors, event volunteers, feline enrichment team members, foster homes, and people to work in the pet food bank.

Volunteer at West Sound Wildlife Shelter

Caring for more than 1,600 wildlife patients a year, West Sound Wildlife Shelter greatly appreciates volunteers. No previous experience is required and all volunteers receive training. There are many volunteer options such as feeding orphaned wild songbirds, lending a hand in their garden, and assisting with one of their fundraising events.

Community Spotlight: Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation

If great schools top the list of what draws new homebuyers to Bainbridge Island, great parks aren’t far behind. With more than 1,500 acres of public park land and a trails system that stretches 40 miles in all directions, exploring and enjoying Bainbridge parks goes to the very heart of island living.

Just ask Windermere Bainbridge Island Broker Jason Shutt. Serving on the board of the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation, Jason sees firsthand the payback that comes from the community’s investment in parks and trails.

“I grew up across the street from a large urban park and spent vacations going to national parks. So recreation is in my blood,” says Jason. He lives near Winslow town center with his wife Mairead and their three children. “I joined the Parks Foundation to ensure I live in a place that gives these same opportunities to others.”

An Island Rich in Parks

The island’s sprawling park system is managed by the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District, a municipal agency. But islanders consistently ask for amenities above and beyond what general tax funding affords. That’s where the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation comes in.

Closely aligned with, but independent from the Park District, the nonprofit Parks Foundation has raised more than $1,000,000 in private funds over the past five years. All funds raised have been for parks and trails projects, which benefit young and old alike. The Foundation led the development of Owen’s Playground, the island’s first accessible playground for kids of all abilities, at Rotary Park.

The new Pickleball Founders Courts at Battle Point Park opened last summer, built by Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District with support from the Parks Foundation. The six dedicated courts and plaza are pickleball’s first-ever permanent home on Bainbridge, honoring the game that was invented on Bainbridge Island in 1965.

Various Initiatives and Programs

The Foundation’s Community Grants program has supported countless smaller projects, from the high school sailing team’s fleet to diving boards and water stations at the Aquatic Center. Joe Richards, a Windermere Bainbridge Island Managing Broker and 22-year resident, has been involved with the Aquatic Center for over nine years and knows first-hand how beneficial it is. “The Masters swimming program, under the leadership of our world-class coach April Cheadle, has exceeded anything I could have hoped for. Thank you BI Parks for providing this person, this program, and this place for our community.”

The Foundation’s support also extends to environmental stewardship and restoration year-round, from Blakely Harbor Park to the Grand Forest, to smaller neighborhood parks islandwide. This is done through the Summer Trails Crew, Nonprofits Helping Parks, and other programs.

The Foundation’s current initiative, KidsUp! The Next Generation of Play at Battle Point Park is rebuilding the original KidsUp! as another inclusive, accessible playground. The centerpiece will be a giant, one-of-a-kind ferry boat play structure with climbable Orca whales. They will be “swimming” nearby to delight and educate kids about the natural environment of the Salish Sea.

“The more you learn about the Parks Foundation, the more you have to be impressed with its impact. Serving on the Foundation board has certainly opened my eyes,” Jason says. “I’m glad to share it with my clients, colleagues in the real estate community, and anyone else who asks. We have world-class parks here, and the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation is a big reason why.”

The Leader in Trails

When it comes to Bainbridge’s trails, you can quickly see Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation’s impact. The Foundation works with the Park District, the City of Bainbridge Island, and other stakeholders to plan and fund new trails connecting parks and neighborhoods. Soon you’ll be able to hike from Winslow all the way to Gazzam Lake Nature Preserve – an unprecedented cross-island route. It’s sure to be a real draw for visitors. And, it’s already drawing people to the island. Online guides like TripAdvisor are full of testimonials from around the country, including hikers wowed by our trails.

Current and Future Benefits

The Foundation is about to launch a major Trails Campaign. This will fund the development of 10 miles of new trails over the next five years. With museums, restaurants, and other cultural spaces largely closed down and/or limited due to the pandemic, many of us have turned to the outdoors for connection and health. No matter where you live on Bainbridge Island, there’s a park or trail near you. The Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation has probably done something to make it better.

“COVID has really brought the importance of our Bainbridge parks into focus,” says Jason, who co-chaired the Sakai Park bond campaign, to create the 23-acre park five years ago. “The lockdown and social distancing have kept us all pretty close to home for the past year. But we have our parks and trails as an outlet to stay active and healthy and grounded. Our community is extremely fortunate, and it shows what a great investment our parks have been and continue to be.”

Windermere Partners with Seahawks again to Tackle Homelessness

We are honored to be the “Official Real Estate Company of the Seattle Seahawks.” All of us at Windermere are proud to kick off our fifth season partnering with the Seahawks to #TackleHomelessness.

Our Tackle Homelessness Campaign

For every defensive tackle made at a Seahawks home game this season, Windermere will donate $100 to Mary’s Place. Mary’s Place provides safe, inclusive shelter and services that support women, children, and families on their journey out of homelessness. This cherished, essential organization has served the homeless community of greater Seattle since 1999.

With the Seahawks’ defensive efforts last year, Windermere donated $30,000 to Mary’s Place. This brought our grand total to $128,200 raised over the past four seasons! We look forward to raising even more this year.

The History of Our Foundation

Our partnership with Mary’s Place aligns with the mission of the Windermere Foundation: to support low-income and homeless families in the communities we serve. Please visit this link if you wish to donate directly to Mary’s Place and their imperative work.

Since 1989, the Windermere Foundation has been raising funds for those in need. A portion of the proceeds from every home purchased or sold using a Windermere agent supports low-income and homeless families in our communities. In 2019, we reached a new milestone by raising nearly $3 million, bringing the grand total to over $40 million in donations raised over the past 31 years.

Our Windermere Foundation Scholarship Recipients

We have recently awarded our Windermere Foundation Scholarship to two incredible graduates from Bainbridge High School’s Class of 2020. There were many talented applicants and it was difficult to choose only two recipients. However, the two students we selected are remarkable individuals. Congratulations to Shea Dephinedae and Libby Clements Hall! Read on to find out more about our scholarship and these well-deserving recipients.

The Scholarship & Our History

Every year, Windermere Bainbridge offers two to three scholarships to invest in Bainbridge Island’s youth. We award the Windermere Foundation scholarships to students based on a variety of their community service involvement and scholastic achievements.

Community service is our primary focus since we pride ourselves on our own community involvement. You will often find our agents and staff volunteering and supporting local organizations. Giving back is a big part of who we are. For the past 15 years, a portion of every agent’s commission has been donated to the Windermere Foundation of Bainbridge Island. All agents participate, and with this common purpose, we collectively show how much our community means to us.

We’re also proud to be part of the broader Windermere Foundation. It impacts communities across 10 states and has raised over $41 million for programs that provide shelter, food, children’s programs, and more.

Scholarship Winner Shea Dephinedae

Shea was an active member of cheer throughout high school and participated in basketball, arts, and community service activities. Also, Shea enjoys cartooning, sculpting, and writing poetry.

When describing community service experiences, Shea said one particular moment that stood out was when they helped senior citizens with technology. “[We] visited a nursing home and helped them to use their phones and tablets. It was always so pleasant to see such kind-hearted people be able to use their phones more effectively and communicate with their families easier.”

A highly active student, Shea was also a member of the National Honors Society for all four years. Additionally, Shea worked for Bainbridge Gardens and still managed to maintain a high GPA.

Now that Shea has graduated, he plans to attend the University of Washington and major in Sculpting. After receiving the Windermere Foundation scholarship, Shea said, “I would just like to say thank you. Windermere’s incredibly generous scholarship was such an amazing and exciting surprise during a rough time. I know this money will greatly benefit me and I hope to one day give back to my community just as you all have.”

Scholarship Winner Elizabeth “Libby” Clements Hall

Throughout high school, Libby was an active member of band and theater, participating in Les Miserables, Radium Girls, Glee voice, and dance. A performing arts enthusiast, Libby has been doing theater since she was three.

Regarding community service, Libby was an assistant in ILC, a special education classroom at Bainbridge High School. Libby said that experience was the highlight of senior year.

A very active student, Libby also volunteered as a BPA main stage volunteer, Island Theater volunteer, NAACP member, and a Bainbridge Pride Volunteer. Libby also maintained a high GPA and received awards and recognition: the Silver Presidential Service Award and honors in theater. Additionally, Libby lettered in band, theater, and winter guard and was an officer of the International Thespian Society.

Libby plans to attend Seattle University, majoring in History, English, and Interdisciplinary Arts with a focus on Music and Theater. “I plan to get a master’s degree in education and become a special education teacher.” Libby was excited to receive our scholarship and said, “Thank you for this awesome opportunity!”

Here at Windermere, we strive to make a difference, big and small and it’s an honor to support Shea and Libby through the Windermere Foundation scholarship. Please join us in wishing them the very best! We know they will make our community very proud.
